Margarita Island is located southeast of the Caribbean Sea, northeast of Venezuela, north of the peninsula of Araya, Sucre State. Together with the islands of Coche and Cubagua, is the only island state of Venezuela, called Nueva Esparta. The island played a significant role in the history of independence of Venezuela.
The August 15, 1498 during the third voyage, Christopher Columbus landed on Margarita. On that trip Admiral also reached firm ground Venezuela. One August day Columbus sighted three islands, two of them small, low and arid (current car and Cubagua), separated by a channel of a third, larger, overgrown and populated by Indians who called it Paraguachoa, word meaning historians as "fish in abundance" and others as "seafarers".
